Kendo

This portrait series looks beyond the armour to the people who shape Reishinkan Kendo Sydney, exploring the character, discipline and humanity behind Kendo.

Derived from the swordsmanship traditions of the Samurai, Kendo literally means “the Way of the Sword”, a practice grounded not only in technique, but in self-discipline, respect, honour and continual self-improvement. At Reishinkan Kendo Sydney, that philosophy is carried forward by Japanese and Australian sensei whose achievements include titles at the World, European and Japanese Kendo Championships, and whose generosity as teachers is as striking as their skill.

These portraits aim to capture the individuals behind the sport, the focus, humility and quiet strength that define Kendo both inside and outside the dojo. Beyond physical training, Kendo sharpens the mind, builds judgement and offers values that carry into everyday life.

Special thanks to Alfred Ong and Usami Sensei.
